Created by dietitians to help you make healthier choices in the supermarket, some claim Fooducate will 'change the way America eats'. After using the device's camera to scan a product barcode, Fooducate analyzes the information found on the nutrition panel. It then grades the product, highlights the calorie count per serving and alerts you to the top negative and positive aspects of consumption. If you are surprised that one of your favorite supermarket foods receives a bad grade, Fooducate gives you five alternative choices with higher ratings. You can also compare two specific products by scanning the bar codes to find out which one is healthier and has a better rating.
When reviewing products details, you are alerted to the fiber content, if the selected item has whole grains, sugar, trans fats, and how it compares to others in the same food category. The Fooducate app has a great menu that allows you to check your history, compare your buys with others that use the app, to keep a 'like' section of your favorite products and has an inbox where you get app information about updates, tips and contests.
The idea of this app is to help consumers make healthier food choices. Hopefully it can sway us from those supermarket impulse buys, but regardless, it is a fun app that provides great information in an easy to use, easy to understand way.
