    Swimming is a great family fitness activity

    Outdoor family activities are very popular this time of year. And while you sometimes would rather be laying at the beach with a cocktail in hand, you can have fun and get in a little exercise and still enjoy the great outdoors.

    I love being outdoors and playing games with the family during a nice relaxing weekend. Below I've listed seven great ways to have fun and stay fit. Just make sure that you stay well hydrated during the day to avoid any serious injury:

    1. Swimming

    Hit that local pool with the family; nothing better than a nice dip on a hot summer day.

    2. Playing Catch

    There's nothing like a little game of catch with a family member as a way to bond. Whether it's a football or baseball, it's a great way to stay limber and have fun while you're at it.

    3. Volleyball

    Set up a volleyball net in the yard. It's not as big a deal as you might think. Once you get a quick game going, it's fun to get the sweat going with a friendly competition.

    4. Basketball

    Shoot some hoops or have a nice game of HORSE. Either way, it's great exercise.

    5. Croquet

    Here's another great family game. Make sure that you look up the rules, because it's more fun if you know how to play.

    6. Horseshoes

    Put a couple rods down and have a good round of shoes -- it's a great partner game.

    7. Frisbee

    Fun, fun, fun... Frisbee is a staple of the warm weather months, especially at a park where you may have a little more room to roam.
