Conventional vs microwave heating, fresh vs. frozen
Hi, I'm new to DTG and would like some advice on heating up.
I would prefer to leave everything in the freezer and cook it direct from there as it saves me having to remember when I thawed stuff. Is the quality of the end result noticably poorer if you cook it from frozen rather than from the refridgerator?.
Also, do other forum members have experiences of cooking in a conventional oven vs. in the microwave. Is there any advantage to cooking in the former?
Lastly, I had to go away for 4 weeks, so I left a few meals in the freezer - do you think they will be ok when I return or should I throw them out?
I'm on the lo-carb Fedex delivered plan.
Thanks,
Paul.

Hi Paul, I have frozen my
Hi Paul,
I have frozen my meals for weeks and then eaten them without any issue of flavor of spoilage. I know Diet to Go does not recommend such handling but I hate to toss out perfectly good food!
As far as microwave versus oven: whenever possible I use the toaster to toast the rolls and buns. I sometimes use the oven to broil the top of meals I have already microwaved.
I only used the oven once to totally heat a meal -- and that was the half-chicken in the low-carb plan. It was good but nuking it was just as good to me!
I know I am always in a hurry and waiting 45 minutes for the oven is rarely an acceptable choice.
Best of luck! I am doing great on this plan. See my first week progress here on my Diet to Go blog:

Oven vs. Microwave
Paul,
I have been microwaving for the first week, until tonight for dinner.
Microwaving will be a last resort for me. Tonight's dinner was much better in texture, flavor, "chewability."
I place three days of meals in the fridge when my box arrives, the rest in freezer. Let the meals thaw in the fridge. Heating takes only 15-20 minutes then.
My first three days of microwaved meals were limp, rubbery, and I had to take parts of the meal out as veggies cooked faster than meat.
I may microwave my breakfasts (time issue), but lunch and dinner will be put in the oven.
Toaster Oven
Has anyone tried toaster ovens? I am wondering if that is the best plan, it would seem to be the best of both worlds.
Toaster Oven + Micro Works Great
I use a toaster oven after microwaving meals quite a bit - this works great. I also use the toaster oven for any rolls/muffins/bagels/etc. I use the toaster oven only for things that are bread/cheese - e.g. the pizza type things. I put the items on a piece of foil which has been sprayed with non-stick spray. Works great.
it could work...
If your meal has been thawed and is at room temp, I think a toaster oven may work just fine. I did my Chicken Alredo Melts in the regular oven the other day, then broiled the tops a light brown and it was the best meal I've had in a while! For time sake, I often use the microwave. I will then use the broiler if it is a cheese-topped meal. I have never used the toaster oven. Good luck!
food safety
It is not a good idea to let your meals sit out till they're "room temperature." That's just asking for trouble. They should remain in the refrigerator till you are ready to heat them. Just thought you should know.
